Why Band/Choir?
- Many studies have been performed on students who participate in music classes. 65% of those with a high school education participated in a music program.
- 83% of people earning $150,000 or more per year participated in school music programs.
- Music also is a great stress alleviator, reducing levels of depression and anxiety, which is especially important for teens.
- Playing and singing music uses both sides of the brain. Musicians tend to do better in school!
- Your child will learn how to work as a team.
- Your child will learn discipline, responsibility, dedication, perseverance, just to name a few.
- Your child will make friends quickly! Our band and choir at Desert Mountain is a family!
- Your child will feel good to know that the hard work they put into learning an instrument will pay off. There is a sense of accomplishment, especially at the concerts.
- Colleges offer scholarships to students who perform auditions when entering college!

Recorder Things
This year, we are focusing on one main instrument with smaller units built in: recorder! While I have recorders in class to use and we did have a family generously donate recorders to our program, it may be a good idea to purchase a recorder, especially if you have little ones at home so you can pass the recorder down. Here is a link if you choose to purchase your own recorder. I have plenty for use if this is not feasible; however if your student chooses to practice at home, I do ask that you purchase so one that belongs to the school isn't left at home. Thank you for your support!
Here are recorder flashcards if your child would like more support at home.

Music Delivery Model
In 4th Grade, the Deer Valley Unified School District utilizes the Music Delivery Model (MDM) in an effort to get students excited to join band and/or choir when they are in 5th Grade. We do share a class set of MDM instruments with other schools, and because of how long this program has been in place and general wear and tear, we do not have enough instruments for every single student to have their own. They will share the actual instrument itself, but any part of the instrument that goes near, in, or on the mouth students will have their own. Although instruments and all parts will be sanitized in between uses, classes, and when received from another school, there is one unit that requires an additional purchase. Below, I have outlined the units, what will be covered, and any additional cost to you.
Unit 1: Percussion
What Will Be Covered: Stick grips, strokes types, rhythm decoding, melodic vs. membrane instruments, parts of the bell kit
Additional Money Cost: $0.00
Unit 2: Vocal and Music Theory
What Will Be Covered: Face shapes, palate shape, syllable shapes, aural training, note and rest values, interval training, chord training
Additional Money Cost: $0.00
Unit 3: Woodwinds
What Will Be Covered: Flute embouchure, clarinet embouchure, hand positions, first sounds, posture, breathing, first songs
Additional Money Cost: $3.00
Unit 4: Brass

Concert Information
Below are friendly reminders of concert attire and expectations. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out!
- Be present at all of our concerts. Concerts are for a grade since there are many things I grade students on, such as their individual performance, group performance, and audience performance. Much like a team, if you are not at our concerts, it prevents our students from having their best performance since that piece will be missing. If you were missing your wide receiver, center, or catcher, your team wouldn't play as well. The same is true for us: if we were missing a percussionist, a clarinet, or a baritone, the music wouldn't sound as well as it could and our performers wouldn't give their best performance. I do my best to create the line-up that will best serve all of our students, so if you have a conflict I can help work with, let me know.
- All students are expected to stay for the entirety of the concert. Some of our students don't perform until later in the concert, so they watch and support your student. Please provide them with that same courtesy.
- After your student is done performing, they will be asked to sit back in the designated band and choir section. This way, I can see them easier and am able to grade their audience performance.
- All students are expected to wear all black. Shirts, pants, skirts, and dresses need to be all black with no design. Black shoes are not required, but are appreciated. Please make sure shoulders are covered, and dresses and skirts are at least fingertip length when sitting down. THE LONGER, THE BETTER! If your student comes to a concert not dressed appropriately, they may not be permitted to perform.

Diamondbacks Night Information
This is an opportunity for our Afternoon Choir, 5th and 6th Grade Choir, and 7th and 8th Grade Choir students to sing at the Diamondbacks game on September 19th, 2025! Students will get to sing with other schools in the Deer Valley Unified School District, and will get to sing on the grass of the field. All performers will need to purchase a ticket to sing, and this is not a required event. Because this is a fundraiser, a portion of the ticket sales using this link goes back to the choir program and are at a discounted rate. Thank you for all of your support!
SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2025:
- 4:30 PM Gates to Chase Field Open at this time.
- 4:45 PM: All anthem singers should plan to be at Chase Field at this time. Upon arrival, please enter the ballpark through any one of the Chase Field entry gates to get their tickets scanned and bags checked. All performers must do this before going to the rehearsal area, so please give yourself plenty of time to do so.
- 5:00 PM: All anthem singers should proceed to the rehearsal area located outside Gate J on the east side of the ballpark (near sections 110-111), under the 7th Street Bridge. Upon exit, please locate your group's name (signs will be posted) and check in with your teacher. Students may stay inside until 5:25. As students set up for rehearsal, line up in a semi-circle with taller performers in the back and shorter performers in the front
- 5:30 PM: A pre-game rehearsal. This will be outside. All participating students should bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- 5:40 PM: Performers will begin lining up to enter the field. From there, all performers will be directed onto the field by D-backs representatives. If you are not in your designated area at this time, you will be unable to participate.
- Approx. 6:27 PM: The performance will begin on the warning track in center field. All groups must quickly exit the field after the performance.
Students and Parents, you will need the following:
- A ticket to the game
- Disposable Water Bottle
- School choir shirt (if you have one) - this makes it easier for them to stay together as they go to their seats
- CLEAR BAGS ONLY: https://www.mlb.com/dbacks/ballpark/information/bag-policy
- CASHLESS PURCHASES ONLY
I will be sending out a Google Form next week. Please fill out which section you are in. After we are done singing, we will be taken up to the closest platform. If possible, have one person from your party to grab your student(s) and bring them back to your seats. You will be required to sign your student in and out. I need to physically see you and your student together in order for me to release them; this helps me make sure all students are safe at all times.

Afternoon Choir Expectations
I am so excited to be continuing with Afternoon Choir again this year! Afternoon Choir meets every Wednesday after school from 3:00pm-4:00pm. If your student is interested in joining Afternoon Choir, they just have to come and have a ride ready to pick them up at 4:00pm. Please be sure to be at as many Afternoon Choir days as possible. This is like a class; every week we build on skills we learned the previous week. I completely understand missing one here and there, but please avoid missing multiple weeks at a time as it will put your child behind. If Afternoon Choir will be cancelled at any point, I will communicate that home.

After School Band
After School Band Expectations and Conservatory
After school band is designed to be a one-on-one experience for our students that need extra support in their music, whether that be extra practice on a song, help reading notes and rhythms, etc. Students are welcome to come and practice on their own or get help from me. This year, we are also partnering with Boulder Creek HS and their band students in a program called Conservatory. The conservatory program will most likely start in September, but students can still come to practice before conservatory starts. This is meant to be a learning opportunity, not a place to hang out. If any student comes to after school band and is not practicing or following expectations, they will be asked to go home.

Desert Mountain STEM Academy students work collaboratively in an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages finding creative solutions to authentic and complex problems. My job is to provide a problem/task, and a supportive environment with high academic standards dedicated to maximizing critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration in the process of solving "real-world problems." Students become the content teachers, and the teacher serves as a facilitator to their learning.
Engineering is a field that focuses on creating and using scientific and technological solutions to problems, such as machines, programs, or structures. It’s crucial for kids to learn about engineering because this knowledge can set them up for a good career. There are many types of engineers, so kids with a wide variety of interests may find that a future in engineering appeals to them. But even kids who don’t plan on becoming engineers can benefit from honing their research and problem-solving skills through study in this area.
