Hello, my name is Shannon Gary and this will be my 22nd year teaching. I am originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. I come from a large family as I am the youngest of 7. I have 2 children. I graduated from ASU West Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. I taught one year in third grade at Greenbriar Elementary, and then moved here to Desert Mountain. the 24-25 school year will be my 21st year at DM. I taught third grade for 3 years, and then joined the 4th grade team, and taught 4th grade for 12 years. I had the opportunity to move up to 5th grade for the 2019-2020 school year.
Some of the things I enjoy doing are spending time with my family and friends, going to the beach, and watching football and watching crime shows. (I am a Huskers fan and an AZ Cardinals fan.)
Please be on time and prepared to learn each day. Students need to be on campus by 8:10 as that is first bell. They are considered tardy after 8:15 and must go to office for a late pass.
Hawk code: Have integrity, be empathetic, take accountability.
Your child will be a given a verbal warning if they are not following the Hawk code. If your child continues to not follow the expectations not, they will be asked to fill out a Minor-(Behavior Reflection form) and an email or phone call home will result, and a structured recess will be given. This means that they will walk for all or part of their recess. I also can sit them out with parent permission, but we like that they are getting their exercise. If your child receives 3 minors, that equals a major and they will be referred to Administration.
6 Minors= 6th Minor Behavior Incident: Student is referred to MTSS-B and administration conferences with parents.
9 Minors= 9th Minor Behavior Incident: MTSS-B review and focused administration intervention
Classwork:
There will be no homework. Students will complete all their work in class.
Missing work:
Work that is not completed on time will result in a 49%. No evidence for the standard will be marked in the grade book until the assignment is completed.
RECESS:
We will have a morning recess and your child is encouraged to bring a snack. Water bottles are also encouraged.
